In Case of Stanley Cup: How to Deal with Tear Gas

I haven’t seen too many Championships in Denver, but one thing they all have in common:  Tear Gas.  Tear Gas isn’t really a Gas, it’s an inhalant that infiltrates the mucous membranes. It is banned from use in War, but it’s also Denver Police Department’s way of telling people “It’s time to move along.”  If you happen to find yourself in a celebration that includes Tear Gas, here’s what to do:

1. Run Away!

You don’t want to be near a canister while it’s spewing tear Gas. The Canisters also get very hot, so rather than moving the canister, it’s easier to move yourself.  Touching the Canister could lead to severe burns.  The sooner you get out of there, the sooner you will get relief from Tear Gas.

2. Face The Wind.

Tear Gas is a powder that sticks to everything.  Wind will blow it off your skin, but you don’t want it blowing back into your eyes, or your mouth.

3. Rinse Your Eyes with Cold Water.

Make sure you rinse from inside to outside, Away from your nose.  And don’t let that water get on your skin or your clothes.  it will still irritate you even after it has been flushed from your eyes.

4. Rinse your clothes and body in Cold Water Too.

The Tear Gas is going to stick to everything it comes in contact with.  If it gets on your shirt, you don’t want that shirt anywhere near your face.  And if you’re getting into a car, you don’t want to bring Tear Gas in with you.

Final Thoughts:  If you are going downtown for the Hockey Game, be aware of your surroundings.  Not everyone downtown is your friend, and situations can change drastically in a short amount of time.  Always have an escape route in mind, and don’t wait for a situation to get out of hand before you bail.
